Cemig Develops First “Green” Transformer

Cemig develops a “green” transformer unprecedented in the world
At the Cidade Industrial substation in Contagem in Belo Horizonte’s Metropolitan Area, the benefits of using the “green” transformer, equipment that uses vegetable oil instead of mineral oil as a means to insulate and cool, are already noticeable.

As well as boosting transformers’ performance, vegetable oil is non-toxic and 99% biodegradable and does not have a negative effect on the environment.
The new technology is a result of a Cemig Research and Development – R&D project, in partnership with ABB, a global power and automation leader. The outcome of the project, which is unprecedented in the world, was to fill a transformer with 100% vegetable oil combined with Nomex, a last generation insulator, which provides transformers with a power gain of up to 40%.
